Cabinets To Cracked Bandsawn Jewelry Box

This is another cabinet salvage project. After dismantling the face frames from another kitchen remodel I was left with quite a bit of usable poplar. I normally just throw together a quick cutting board when salvaging this type of wood but I decided to set it aside and ponder on a different project. It wasn’t until I purchased a bandsaw that I decided on what to make. A cracked bandsawn jewelry box.

A big inspiration for this project was a bandsaw box that Steve Carmichael made last year for his daughter. He also made a step by step video to cover the project. I’ll include that video here as well.

The design I went with was something I have seen on the internet repeatedly over the years. A project such as a bandsaw box provides a great opportunity to get creative and make a unique design but I really didn’t want to this time. I’m not trying to re-invent the wheel with this one but rather get some good bandsaw experience. It has been a while since I ran a bandsaw and this was a great chance to brush up on my bandsaw skills. At the bottom of this post you will find a link to the instruction article and template that I used (I reduced it for a height of 11″).

Overall I am very happy with the way they turned out. For drawer pulls I cut up a scrap piece of dark green poplar which was also salvaged a long time ago from a box spring mattress. The transitions in between drawers are not the prettiest but not too bad for my first bandsaw box. I used natural Danish oil to make the color stand out a bit more and covered that with Satin Deft Spray Lacquer. Below is a short video covering the build.

The blade I used for this box is a 3/16″ 4tpi skip tooth blade from Highland Woodworking.

  1. Right below the second video on this page is a link to the original article regarding them. At the bottom of that page is a downloadable file. I scaled mine down to 11″ tall to fit on a regular piece of computer paper

  2. This was one of the best instructional videos I have seen and the box is amazing. Great work all round. Will be trying this for sure. Many thanks. Paul
