Lester recycled some lumber and made a couple beautiful, functional projects. The coat rack he made is an instant eye catcher. I can imagine his dad will get many compliments on them both. Check them out and let him know what you think. Lester writes:
My family did our Christmas today and I made these two things for my dad. The distressed hat rack was scrap wood I picked up at a construction site. I just used pocket hole joinery and distressed it with a hammer and ice pick mostly. The first coat was stain was Minwax ebony stain. Once dry, I sanded it down and used the weathered oak stain for the second coat followed by one coat of satin Minwax fast dry polyurethane.
The table was built out of ripped down 2×6’s I believe and some 1×4’s from a different project. I edge glued the oak pallet boards and planed just one side to get them all to 1/2 inch. After finishing this table top, I read where it isn’t a good idea to frame out a glued up panel like that due to seasonal wood movement. It could cause issues later on, but maybe not.
The joinery for this table is pocket hole screws and glue. I used the weathered oak stain and finished up with 3 coats of the oiled based satin polyurethane again. My parents really loved the table!
