Vlog 52: Questions About The Vise

Video Notes:

  • The bench vise works great.
    • Super easy to pull the pipes out. Just reach in and release the rear jaw.
    • 2-1/2″ of travel  in the screw head itself which means for material 2-1/2″ or less you will never have to pull the pipes out.
    • It’s perfect height to do some damage to the baby maker parts. Watch out :)
    • Using it with bench dogs didn’t work out. Not because of the vise but because my table top surface is only 1/2″ plywood.
  • The safety glasses I use are a pretty nifty DeWalt pair. This is not my Amazon link. Purchasing these safety glasses or anything else through this Amazon link helps my friend Matthew Cremona who just recently had a baby. Well, his wife had the baby, not him. But I’m sure every little bit helps with a new addition to the family.

  1. Good morning, Jay! If you can remove your dowels to recover your vise dog holes, you might try to install some reinforcing material under a few bench top dog holes (maybe the closest two pairs) to see whether that will be stable. You’d lose a little storage space under there, but the functionality gain is awesome.

  2. If you made a dog that used two holes in a line down the table ( in line with the clamping direction as apposed to perpendicular to it) would that work” ?

  3. I agree with you about the clear wrap around goggle. I keep losing them on the top of my bench.
I completed your above garage door shelf design in my shop this weekend. Finally I reduced the clutter in the shop. Have a cool week ahead of you.

  4. Hey Jay, Love all your stuff. You inspire me to do more. Was going to make your original Moxon vise, but was waiting to do the Paulk table then attach it there, and you beat me to it. Wondering why the vise front is not attached to the clamps, seems it were be more efficient.

    • The front jaw is not fixed to the pipes for the same reason as the holes not being 7/8″ for the pipes. It will bind unless both pipes are moved at the exact same time.

  5. Awesome vice Jay. You always motivate and inspire me to get out in the shop and build something. Keep up the great work.

  6. Hi Jay, I am enjoying your video’s and think you do an excellent job, presented in a natural way. What do you use to film thm with as it’s very good quality and may interest others. That is if you haven;t alreday mentioned this before. Cheers and keep up the good work.

  7. Jay, just finished the conduit/pipe lumber rack. It works great. I bought a wood vise for 2/3 off and mounted it like yours with about 4″ from the right side of the workbench. I wish I would have mounted it flush to the right for hand sawing. Have you had a need to for the vise to be all the way to the right?

    Mike

    • Hey Mike. Glad the lumber rack is working for ya. That’s good to hear. I don’t handsaw often at all but so far I haven’t had a need to mount a board that far right.
