Vlog #74: There Are No Errors, Just Opportunities To Be Unique…. (Miter Mike)

Video Notes:

  • I really really really really really like how the dining table top turned out.
  • A #4 1/2 smoothing plane is a beast!
  • The dining table will be finished with either lacquer or water based polyurethane to keep the natural colors of the wood.
  • I chose to use the breadboard end joinery simply because I thought the through tenon would look unique.
  • I’m not beating myself up over the slight error on the wedged tenon. It’s all good homies.
  • Miter Mike said: There are no errors, just opportunities to be unique. I really like that quote!
  • Onward with the dining table build!
  • Lams tongue details look nice :)
  • BUSY week. Have fun friends :)

  1. The unique touches that you made to the breadboard joinery are great. Hell, I couldn’t get within even an inch of being close!! I’m sure Mr. Chimpendale used a lot of hidden “filler” on his pieces.
I’d go with water based Poly as a final finish on the table. I used it on a soft pine kitchen table a couple of years ago – it wears like iron. I had poor results on “professionally applied” lacquer on kitchen cabinets – finger nails scrape it off at the door knobs.

  2. That row of cabinets in the background haunt me! I’m beging to hate the jumbled up mess in my shop. Oh well……
You did the right thing not trying to pull out that wedge. One day you will look at it and smile.

  3. Great top and cleaver unique end design. There are always 10 solutions to a problem but the best one is the one you use and are happy with

  4. Jay – Great videos and I watch often.
I was wondering if you have ever done a video about dust collection, that is where to place the dust collectors and routing the hoses etc. I have the equipment but not sure how to make placement practical in a growing shop. Because I park cars in the shop/garage placement needs to be convenient. I’m trying not to make collection setup a project every time I want to use my collectors. I have 10 ft. ceilings so I have room above. I have an ideal I got from watching how RR round houses work. A selector type of situation. Any comments would be appreciated.

  5. I’D GO WITH THE WATER BASED POLY FINNISH ALSO , IT WOULD NOT HAVE THE ODOR AND SLOW DRYING TIME OF LACQUER.
KEEP UP THE GOOD VIDEOS , I AM ALMOST 80, BUT AM LEARNING MORE EVERY DAY !

  6. Terrific looking table top and joinery… What a great breadboard joint to handle the wood movement and clean up the look of the ends. Just a great job!

  7. Miter Mike’s quote is a nice riff on Bob Ross from the old Joy of Painting TV show: “There are no mistakes; only hhappy accidents.” Thanks for sharing not only your mistake but the fix as well. Nice table top!
