Vlog #78: Dining Table & a Personal Thank You

Video Notes:

  • I published the dining table video……..finally. Crazy how some projects get held up on every possible area.
  • The dining table top was secured to the base with these table top hold down clips. I kinda glossed over that in the video. My apologies.
  • I can’t say it enough. Thank you all so much for the support, love, and kind words over the past week and a half. It has meant so much to me and my family. Thank you.

  1. Jay, It was great to see all the support that was generated.
Yes there is many nice people out in the world doing a lot in the background, many thanks to all.
You come across also as a great person with out any bias or negativity at all (in fact so do all the wood workers I have come across…)

Take care good to see your progress, you come across well and are an inspiration to many starting out plus more.

    Cheers

  2. Americans are among the most compassionate and generous people on earth. We are blessed to have so much and be able to support each other. Kindest regards to you and family!

  3. If we can’t handle talking about personal issues, politics, and religion, then that is just sad. They are three of the most important areas in all of our lives. Seeing as they are so important, how could we not talk about them? They help define who we are. Feeling like you cannot share one of those topics is like feeling like you cannot share a piece of yourself.

I appreciate the thanks, Jay. They way I see it we were all blessed by the opportunity to help out someone in need. God bless.

  4. Jay, just fyi, Rockler has the clips for $2.99 for a bag of 8. So far they have the best price that I have found. It’s only a few dollars diff but if someone is like me and on a tight budget ever dollar counts.

  5. Condolences on the passing of your F-I- Law. You are correct, there is lots of decent people out there just that the press needs the a/holes to sell papers. My analogy is the auto race. Most people want to se a good crash – no body bags – but a good crash .

    Table turned out great

  6. Jay, just watched your latest vlog #78. Had no knowledge of what had happened. Went to the page to contribute but I was too late as it had closed. Would have liked to help out.
On the wood working side you give some great ideas and builds. I’ve just got into wood working in a serious way after retiring.
The vid’s are a great way to learn and the production is second to none.
Keep up the great work and once again sorry for your loss.

  7. I heard a syndicated radio host talk about building a community of listeners, who essentially become `extended family`, this done by sharing personal info and letting folks inside.

I think this is also a byproduct of most YouTube channel subscriptions. People are good at getting a getting a sense of people and hang in with the channels that resonate with them. Your channel is one of mine (along with a lot of other folks). So, just go with it and … breath in … breath out .. grasshopper.

    My condolences for your loss.

    • I agree. With Jay’s almost 230K subscribers I can see the day when there is a Bates Woodworking gathering for us all to meet.

  8. Jay –

I ran across your site and YouTube channel recently and can’t seem to break away. You’ve got some serious skill, and the posts and videos you do are top notch. Just wanted to send my word of encouragement and appreciation for your work, and also send condolences to you and your family about the loss of your father-in-law.

Also, you had asked in the vlog about ideas for Tool Talk. Maybe this doesn’t apply directly, but I would love to hear about your favorite jigs, sleds, and/or other handy items around the shop.

  9. Jay. You don’t need to apologize for being human. I appreciate all your vids and all that you put out for the woodworking community. The UP salutes you. Thanks. Keep doing what you do so well.

  10. Jay, as I have stated in your latest table video you really are on inspiration to all of us. Making this video would not have been easy and I could see you were starting to get emotional. So what if it was personal, you have shared yourself with us so much over the years and it’s just another way of seeing what kind of person you are. The generosity of the community world wide who enjoy your videos demonstrates the effect you have had on people over the years. I lost my father a while back and my mother last year, its good to talk about it and reach out sometimes. I wish you and your family all the best going forward….take care and keep the great videos coming.

  11. We are here for you Pal.
Just flip the switch and we will respond , after all you have done for us .
GOD has a special place for your Father in law , In his house he has many rooms .

  12. I am always inspired by your terrific videos and woodworking skills which are of the highest order. Sorry to hear of your loss and it’s very warming to hear of the support you have received. Can I add my sympathies to you and your wife in particular. All the best for the future.

  13. I’m with John Cooper. A Bates Woodworking reunion/ gathering would be great!!
Hang in there. We are here for each other. If we can’t support each other in this life we might as well go straight to hell because that is where we will end up otherwise.

  14. Everyone has their ups and downs…..glad to hear you were helped so much. would think that all who follow what you do would be willing to help. We are all real people trying to be better. Sorry for your loss

  15. SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS, JAY. I WAS ON VACATION IN MYRTLE BEACH LAST WEEK ,AND AWAY FROM ANY COMPUTERS FOR A WHOLE WEEK
(AND IT FELT GOOD) FOR A CHANGE.
AS FOR THE TABLE AND BENCHES , AS ANY MARRIED MAN KNOWS ‘WIVES RULE” MEANING WHAT SHE WANTS , SHE GETS .
I NEVER KNEW THERE WERE AS MANY WOODWORKING PEOPLE MAKING INTERESTING VIDEO’S ON THE WEB AS THERE ARE, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK !

  16. I am sorry for the loss of your father in-law and for being so late with this comment my prayers are with you and your family I thought I might let you know that I enjoy your video’s a lot even though I have been in wood working for more than 40 years building everything from guitars to houses and you seem to always show me some new little tricks and processes that help me get a little better in what I do, and I believe that God has blessed you with this gift of wood working and being creative weather you see it or not sometimes we never see the blessings that we pass on to others but God does and he never forgets and for this he turns our pains and hurts into blessings so please don’t ever quit using the gift that God has blessed you with and I hope you keep up with your video’s to keep blessing us with what you do and again I pray that God will give you and your family peace and comfort thru this trial and if there is anything that I can help please let me know and God Bless you
