Vlog #81: Back To Work & Upcoming Road Trip(s)

Video Notes:

  • The tool wall is great. No complaints. I still need to make a few more holders. Just haven’t gotten around to it yet.
  • The saw holders are all back beveled so that the saws tend to stay against the wall and so far have not had any inclination of falling off.
  • Household 3-in-1 oil prevents rust very, very well.
  • Generally speaking, keeping an old “beater” work truck will save you a LOT of money in the long run if you drive it conservatively and keep the oil changed. I did some general maintenance stuff on my truck this past weekend for the first time since 2010. It’s served me well and continues my life long streak of never having a vehicle payment.
  • Lots of travel situations coming up:
    • Going to Jackson MS either this weekend or next week to shoot a few videos at my friend Wayne Brown‘s shop. If you use Instagram click his name and give him a follow.
    • Wife leaving for a couple weeks of annual training with the military. This always comes up so if you’re wondering, she’s a non-active duty 1st lieutenant in the Army Reserves.
    • Shortly after that a good friend will be staying for about a week. Fellow woodworker but not sure on if or what projects we will do.
    • Shortly after that I’ll be in Michigan for about 5 days to visit family.
    • Shortly after that I’ll be in the Green Bay, Wisconsin, area to shoot some colab videos with Nick Ferry and April Wilkerson.
    • Shortly after that I’ll be in Cincinnati, Ohio, for Woodworking In America.
    • Shortly after that I’ll be back in Michigan for a wedding and to relax for a few days.
    • Shortly after that…..I have no clue.
  • Time to get back to making stuff. Have a great day folks.

  1. Jay,
Another tool talk topic I would love to hear about. Your battery operated finish nailer. I bought a Senco brand one, and hate it to pieces, but I really like what I see in yours. What brand is it? Does it use the Paslode Fuel Cells like mine does? How many nails can it shoot per charge?, etc. Thanks for all you do.

    • It’s Ryobi. 18v battery only. Already did a tool talk on it. I only use 5/8″ or 1-1/4″ brad nails and have never had a problem out of it.

  2. Been watching you for a couple of years and really enjoy your content. I think all the woodworking content providers are good and appreciate their effort. However, at my skill level (making firewood) and knowledge you are one of two woodworkers I follower consistently. I have learn much from you and hope my skills have improved; I know my knowledge has increased. Give my thanks to your wife for her service from an old Vietnam vet.

  3. Everyone needs a break from the routine. Drive carefully and enjoy the chaotic schedule.

  4. Jay,

Travel safe and have a great time traveling throughout Michigan and I am looking forward to all you upcoming projects.

    Thank you,

    Jim

  5. Jay. We live in the UP a couple of hours from Green Bay. I’d love to come see you, Nick, and April. Please tell me when and where, and I’ll try to make that event. We go to Green Bay often and our “shopping” experience as where we live, there are not that many places to go. We can fit it in, I hope. Thanks.

  6. YOU SOUND LIKE MY SON ,EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE HE COMES OVER AND WE GO OUT TO DINNER,( HE SAYS HE HAS COME OVER TO DUST THE OLD MAN OFF AND TAKE HIM OUT ) HAVE A GOOD TRIP .

  7. Buddy of mine has a similar setup to you for his planes and what he did is to glue a 1/4″ piece of dowel where the toe is so the blade is off the wood.As for the chisel safety – the sad safety police – also be wary of sharp sawdust lol
