Vlog #92: Cincinnati, Detroit, Clamp Rack

Video Notes:

  • The suspended shelves that I made last week function as intended and really increase convenience when cooking. But while they look great individually they don’t really match the decor in my kitchen. Not sure how long I’ll keep them there.
  • I’ll be in Cincinnati, Ohio, for Woodworking In America 2016. It’s September 16-18 in Covington, Kentucky, which is right across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio. If you’re in the area be sure to stop by!
  • The next weekend I’ll be in South East Michigan again and I’d like to do some type of meet up. I’ve already talked to Tyler from DIY Tyler and David from MakeSomething.TV and they are both interested in doing something as well. If you’re in the area and have a suggestion of where to go that would be great.
  • I think I’ll make a new clamp rack this week. My current one kinda sucks. I’ll get into that in the video.

  1. I’m planning to attend WWA on Saturday. Looking forward to meet all of you guys. I’m about 1 1/2 hours away. A couple years ago The Woodtalk boys had a meetup at the Keystone Bar & Grill not too far from the convention center. They had the meet up on the second floor of restaurant. I don’t know any particulars about this place. I know it was fun.

  2. I built a clamp rack similar in style to what Matt Lane did a few months back. I really like it and it hold more clamps in a compact space. Of course, that means I need to buy more clamps, right?

  3. Jay,
FYI for clamps see Norm Abrams YouTube:
HOW TO: Build a Work Table and Clamp Cart – Part 1 of 2.

I purchased the plans but it’s not hard to come up with your own. I loaded it up with a lot of various clamps and so far it’s worked out. I also added some room for layout squares and levels. I installed 5″ wheels and it moves quite easily.
Take care and I enjoy watching your videos.

PS I purchased your Dust collector/vac tower and that has been a fantastic improvement. I try to keep every shop project on wheels to keep the the shop in a “fluid state”

  4. After having a clamp fall off the wall and hit me(big 4′ Jorgensen cabinet clamp at that) I’m not sure hanging clamps on the wall is a good idea. At least not higher than my head.

  5. Count me among those looking for the ideal(?) way to store and use clamps. My current method is on a wall (which includes a few head bumps) but too far from my assembly area. A mobile cart seems like the best solution. We’ll see. Look forward to all of your ideas and methods. Thanks!

  6. I agree with you on the kitchen under counter shelves, they are not a good match for your kitchen. They look like a shop item, take them down and use them in your shop.
