Interesting Stuff From Around The Web #170 – April 1, 2017

Every week I like to share a few things I find interesting. Mostly video content with an occasional website article. All of the content you will find in these posts is free to you. Remember that liking, subscribing, or sharing free content goes a long way in helping produce more free content. If you like that creator’s work, share it! Also, thank you to those who send me links through the week when you find something really interesting.

Richards Vidzickis makes an incredible canoe using mostly traditional hand tools. If you’ve got 19 minutes to spare definitely get lost in this beautiful video.

My Garage Woodshop

A common question is “Should I buy a jointer or planer first?” The answer is a planer. A planer can both plane and joint. A jointer can only joint. Using a sled like this will allow you to get flat boards at a planer.

Winston Moy

Have you tried Fusion 360 before? I’m a SketchUp fan mainly because it’s a lot easier for me to make plans with. But parametric modeling is a tremendous tool. Winston’s videos are very well produced as well.

U-Haul

I recently towed 1000 board feet of lumber on a trailer. Knowing where to put the weight on a trailer is very important. Even if you never personally tow a trailer I think this video should at the very least watch this.

  1. That putty caulk is a awesome product. I have used it many times over the years for different applications for sealing gaps around the house. My shop is in the basement so as part of cocooning the area from traveling dust, I used it to seal gaps from piping going up through floor and other smal areas. If caulk is not a only option this so much neater and cleaner. Highly recommend it.

  2. Fusion 360 is a great bit of software but with a steep learning curve. Unfortunately there’s no user manual as it’s continually changing, so it’s web based training. Watch the videos etc. Shame Autodesk’s videos leave a bit to be desired and the forum answers the questions by saying ‘watch the videos’ and making you feel lie a noob. When they haven’t even read the problem you post… A bit like my old school report ‘could do better’

  3. Hello Jay
I just completed a smaller 2 foot version of the flattening sled for planer this weekend. My neighbor gave me a ash. Board that was severely cupped. Ran the. board and sled thru the planer. Worked like a charm.

  4. Thanks for putting these collections forward, Jay. Always find them informative, even fascinating! Keep up the great work! – Dave

  5. Jay,
Really enjoyed this weeks installments. I loved the idea of the weather stripping-such a simple thing so over looked by many. And the dug out was very cool too. Thanks agains for another weeks installment.
