Interesting Stuff From Around The Web #211 – July 14, 2018

Every week I like to share a few things I find interesting. Mostly video content with an occasional website article. All of the content you will find in these posts is free to you. Remember that liking, subscribing, or sharing free content goes a long way in helping produce more free content. If you like that creator’s work, share it! Also, thank you to those who send me links through the week when you find something really interesting.

Wood nails? Forced dowels :) I wonder what wood species this is limited to. I think there has to be a point where the wood being nailed is just too hard for a wood nail to be driven through it. But it’s a nice concept though. I can see this being used in place of dowels…so long as the appearance of through dowels is acceptable.

JT Woodworks

Here’s a beautiful end table. Great joinery on the base but what I like the most about this is the design created with the top panel. It’s also a great use of scrap pieces for the top panel.

John Heisz – I Build It

As the title says, this is probably the easiest lumber rack to make. Looks like it can hold enough weight too.

CReeves Makes

This is one heck of a shop table…regardless of what you need to use it for. The black melamine top looks great as well.

YouCanMakeThisToo

Here’s another approach to the assembly table. Lots of storage in this one. And it looks quite full already :)

Young Je

I like the amount of adjustments this jig has. It allows you to really set up the jig and reduce the possibility of operator errors when making mortises with a plunge router.

Jorge Araujo

When house training our dogs years ago we used a dog crate to make sure we didn’t have any accidents in our apartment at night. What we didn’t expect was that after the dogs were house trained they naturally prefered to rest in their crate. It was their own bedroom of sorts. The only downside of a dog crate is that they aren’t the best looking pieces of furniture. Jorge solved that aspect with this build. Great job with this build and the dogs look like they love it as well.

Yaskawa America, Inc.

I remember the wave of hobby CNC machines hitting YouTube in the past years. That spiked the “is a CNC still woodworking?” debates. While I understand that robots take jobs it’s still fascinating to see what they can do. I like the top comment on this video: “Embrace the automation. It is coming if you like it or not.”

The Backyard Vertical Gardener

I was 100% set on making a nice compost bin until I saw this. Forget building, just use pallets. Also, the video is a great resource for anyone wanting to properly create compost.

Ollari’s

I’m sure just about everyone reading this has enough scrap material on hand to batch out a bunch of these this weekend. Maybe not the hardware but that part is minimal and easily attainable.

Fix This Build That

I recently stumbled upon this one again. I’ve used a few of these methods but I didn’t know about the polycrylic method. That one turned out great!

  1. Those wooden nails are pretty cool. Having seen enough photos online of wood piercing concrete from tornado level winds, it’s hard to say where the limit will be for these dowels.

  2. I love the dog crates, but I am afraid that if I suggested that to my english mastiffs, as opposed to individual twin mattresses they each have, they might kick me out of my bed. But there is no truth to the rumor that I spoil them.
