Interesting Stuff From Around The Web #222 – November 3, 2018

Every week I like to share a few things I find interesting. Mostly video content with an occasional website article. All of the content you will find in these posts is free to you. Remember that liking, subscribing, or sharing free content goes a long way in helping produce more free content. If you like that creator’s work, share it! Also, thank you to those who send me links through the week when you find something really interesting.

WoodworkersJournal

This hot pipe set up is an interesting take on bending wood. I’ve never seen this before. Of course, be safe in your shop when using a torch in your shop.

Wood By Wright

One of James Wright’s latest projects is a developing resource for finding hand tools around the world. If you are thinking about getting into hand tools and/or “Hybrid” Woodworking, this list of known tool resources is a great place to start.

ZH Fabrications

The tool handle just got a bit more interesting. ZH Fabrications downscaled the river table to a showcase worthy portable user tool. Zach is a great craftsman and a really talented guy. Definitely subscribe if you haven’t already.

R Humphrey

A bowl is not always just a bowl. This unique design from R Humphrey utilizes the router and the lathe for a beautiful piece of artwork. With design work you often don’t need the precision of a CNC machine. A steady hand with a handheld router will work as well :)

Stinnett Sticks

Patience is a virtue, but a healthy mix of power carving along with the intricate details of wood burning and fine brush painting proves to be an artistic balance that brings this walking stick to life. I’ve featured Mike’s works of art before and will continue to do so. Each one is unique and each one deserves a million eyeballs looking at it. So much skill and vision in these pieces.

izzy swan

Izzy Swan is an innovative woodworker that pushes it to the limit on many builds. This recent build of an affordable chainsaw mill does not disappoint, and his standing push design makes this affordable option even more appealing. Have a chainsaw? You can knock out this build in a day and start milling that tree that fell down in your yard :)

ToolMetrix

Another wood milling video but this time with a bandsaw. This is a great option for smaller chunks of wood. I can see someone finding a few figured or spalted pieces of firewood and using this technique to mill figured wood for something like a gift box.

izzy swan

Another one from Izzy. This instructional experiment has some definite potential, possibly as a decorative addition to a project or a unique style of furniture legs.

Bird Mouth Joinery Box. Lots of interesting stuff in this one. The wood choices, the shape, the swiveling design. All interesting.

  1. Wood bending around a hot iron is used by luthiers a lot, e.g. in building violins. So it must be at good way to bend thin strips.
