Interesting Stuff From Around The Web #225 – November 24, 2018

Every week I like to share a few things I find interesting. Mostly video content with an occasional website article. All of the content you will find in these posts is free to you. Also, thank you to those who send me links through the week when you find something really interesting.

ODDBALL GALLERY – Keith Williams

How about a plywood ball?! Yes folks, a ball made out of plywood. Nice shop, nice project, nice video. I’d love to see more from Keith. The lathe setup looks really interesting as well.

One Minute Workbench

There’s a lot of homemade tracks or “door boards” out there to help guide a circular saw. I even have a video on making one. But this one is nice in that it guides the saw on both sides, is easy to make, and incorporates sight holes for aligning to your mark.

Andy Phillip

I love unusual materials being used for projects. Sometimes the result doesn’t look right but more frequently the unusual nature of the materials adds a design contrast that pulls the viewer in. I’ve seen epoxy and pencils for a variety of turned items but this is my favorite mix of those two materials. A skull that otherwise has a dry, dreary, and gloomy association is lightened and brought to life (no pun intended) with the pencils.

Woodsmith

Handy or inconvenient? What do you think? I can see this being an alternative to a hand plane for certain woods.

Carved Wood Design Bespoke Kitchens

I LOVE this piece. While I would never give up the traditional aesthetics of woodworking design I really do appreciate the occasional piece here and there like this. It’s a fun, flowing design that is sure to be a talking point. I love everything about it.

Ronald Walters

When I grow up I want to be like Ron! He’s got a well thought out solution for everything! I’ve always been skeptical of drill press dust collection because large bits throw large chunks everywhere. Just sweep up afterwards, right? Seeing this in action was great.

Have you ever thought about a traditional hand plane being used in an automobile manufacturing facility? Check out the Morgan Motor Company where they still hand craft the frame from Ash.

  1. I like Kieth Williams ball. Wonder how a walnut and maple Buckey Ball would turn out. I can do 15 ” on my old Shopsmith so one of these cays when my job jar is under control….
Second thoughts, it might look too much like wooden soccer ball. Hmmmm.

  2. I have had a Safe-T-Planer for over 40 years! Use it on the aux spindle of my RAS. Not used very often, but really handy to plane odd shaped reliefs in projects. Looks a little dicey, safety-wise but is actually very safe and smooth to use.
