Interesting Stuff From Around The Web #233 – January 26, 2019

Every week I like to share a few things I find interesting. Mostly video content with an occasional website article. All of the content you will find in these posts is free to you. Remember that liking, subscribing, or sharing free content goes a long way in helping produce more free content. If you like that creator’s work, share it! Also, thank you to those who send me links through the week when you find something really interesting.

Seth’s Custom Creations

Seth is a 14 year old who bought tools himself by selling stuff at craft shows. It’s really refreshing to see someone at his age not making any excuses and getting out there and earning his stuff. Be sure to check out his other videos and let him know what you think!

Here’s another one from Seth.

Positive couple. Позитивная парочка.

Lots of creativity and personal style in this build. That’s the beauty of making stuff though. You can make it however YOU want to make it.

Dylan Magaster

This is such a gorgeous retreat in the middle of nature. The design is incredible with a lot of style. Also a lot of dedication to build it in such a remote location with harsh weather. Pay attention for the star shadow :)

Stinnett Sticks

I love these videos from Mike. The carving talent and artistic painting is obvious but his story telling is what really makes these videos a complete package. Here he tells us about his inspiration.

Cliff Dryer

Another video from a youngster interested in woodworking. Great job Dylan and I encourage you to make more projects and videos.

Maker’s Box

Another sawmill video. It’s always interesting seeing the machines responsible for cutting lumber for us in an efficient manner.

core77inc

Although a CNC machine is used to make this the real takeaway is the design for the project. I really like the integrated label tabs on each tray.

Predator Cues

This isn’t woodworking obviously but it is a passion of mine and an incredible feat. I doubt many will watch much of this one but it’s such an incredible accomplishment in the pool world that deserves more attention. John Schmidt is on a lifelong quest to break the straight pool record of 526 balls set by the late Willie Mosconi in 1954. In straight pool you shoot any ball into any pocket until you have one ball left on the table. The goal is to position your shot on the last ball so that after racking the other 14 balls again you make the 15th ball and the cue ball goes into the rack to break up the balls and continue your run. Theoretically speaking you can run balls without missing forever. Shooting any ball into any pocket sounds like an easy game but there’s much more to it than that. It’s one of the most difficult games in pool to master. This is the game to teach all aspects of shooting pool: position play, problem solving, shot making, breakout shots. The record of 526 consecutive balls is an incredible feat that many believe will never be broken. John got close with this run of 434. The run came to an end unexpectedly due to a crazy incident with the cue ball. I’d love to see John break the record.

  1. Hello Jay. This really is some interesting stuff. Nice to see the younger crowd getting plugged into woodworking.
Also, am humbled by the walking sticks. Those are simply amazing. The story line behind it only adds to the pleasure in viewing the video.
I regret I couldn’t make it to the event in Birmingham a few months ago. Had Grandad duties there and couldn’t get away. Still, time well spent.
    Hope you are well.

  2. Jay, I always look forward to your latest ISFATW. I really like the variety of videos you share. I subscribe to both of your channels and think you’re a great teacher and explain things well. I’m a part-time college professor and have an appreciation for good teaching. Keep up the great work.
Now, I need to go clean up my shop…it never seems to end…

  3. As always Jay – great stuff. Appreciate the interesting off the grid video. Thanks for the pool video too. Growing up and shooting against my dad, he told stories of seeing Masconi several times (my dad’s personal best was 120-something). Brought back a lot of memories.

  4. Excellent finds. I think I’m going to build a birdhouse… I’ll have to ask the Easter Bunny for a CNC. I watched most of the pool game. A truly amazing accomplishment.

  5. Great content Jay! Very impressive 14 year old kid. I also love the cabin. I have been admiring Stinnett wood carving for a while now. He is amazing! Thank you for sharing.

  6. Hi Jay, thanks for sharing this post. I found the blog very insightful, brilliant content and the videos were really entertaining to watch. I will definitely be using these tips when doing DIY in the future!
