Interesting Stuff From Around The Web #256 – September 7, 2019

Every week I like to share a few things I find interesting. Mostly video content with an occasional website article. All of the content you will find in these posts is free to you. Remember that liking, subscribing, or sharing free content goes a long way in helping produce more free content. If you like that creator’s work, share it! Also, thank you to those who send me links through the week when you find something really interesting.

Bobby Duke Arts

Though not a woodworking video, this video from Bobby Duke Arts demonstrates creative power carving in an unusual medium, a pool ball, and incorporates some organic material. Note: no animals were harmed in the making of this video, though opinions on whether or not they should have been were definitely argued in the comments.

izzy swan

If creativity is not Izzy Swan’s middle name, it probably should be. Izzy comes up with some really innovative jigs and solutions on a regular basis. One of his most recent videos highlights his table saw lathe jig, and it doesn’t disappoint. In this video, Izzy demonstrates the functionality of the jig and he details the safety of using this jig to achieve efficiency at the table saw for making repeatable turnings. I really like how the top is closed so you can not only see what is going on but also the dust collection is improved.

Gunflint Designs

Dust collection is a very popular topic in the woodworking community. This custom fence for the miter saw from Gunflint designs take a relatively newer design and adds flexibility for greater functionality. He also really details his thought process throughout the build and demonstrates how he coped with some of the design flaws to end up with a finished project that allows you to still increase your dust collection at the miter saw while maintaining the ability to make angled cuts and bevels.

Finding/Marking the center of the edge of a board can sometimes take a while. You measure the board thickness, then set up a marking gauge then scribe the line, and if you move the marking gauge a little when tightening it, you have to go back and do it all again. If you don’t notice it at first, it can throw off the whole project. This board center gauge can help take the guesswork out of finding the center of a board and makes finding the center a quick and easy task.

Michael Alm

Plywood is used in tons of projects from general construction to, making some of our favorite jigs, to making fine furniture. The versatility of plywood is only limited by the imagination. Clearly Michael Alm had his thinking cap on when he started using plywood to make patterns. Take a look at this video where he shows you how to make some really nice looking patterns from plywood and even does some experimenting with new patterns with the scraps.

Ryan Gratland

The CNC machine, as we have discussed a few times, is a hard worker and it gets the job done without complaining (as long as everything is set up correctly). The only problem is it usually requires a good bit of dedicated space in the shop. If you aren’t using the CNC and want to save some of that dedicated space, consider following along in this build series from Ryan Gratland as he builds a CNC Mobile Flip Top Station to increase the versatility of our favorite workhorse.
