Interesting Stuff From Around The Web #257 – September 21, 2019

Every week I like to share a few things I find interesting. Mostly video content with an occasional website article. All of the content you will find in these posts is free to you. Remember that liking, subscribing, or sharing free content goes a long way in helping produce more free content. If you like that creator’s work, share it! Also, thank you to those who send me links through the week when you find something really interesting.

Glenn Tree Art

This is an article I came across this week about a guy that exchanged his slicer for a chainsaw and proved that it is never too late to follow your passions. (Click the image to read the article.)

If you have dabbled in woodturning for any length of time, you probably know that when blanks start getting thin, every cut becomes a calculated risk to your overall project. What happens when the thinnest part of your turning is smaller than a toothpick and the project itself is shorter than a quarter? Check out this micro-turned goblet from woodturningwithtim1. I’m pretty sure I held my breath for the majority of this video.

Jeremy Fielding

This is a great video from Jeremy Fielding where he reviews some of the engineering principles for building projects while he walks you through his process of designing a workbench with 2 surfaces to save space in the shop. He also discusses some of the benefits of prototyping large builds to iron out potential mistakes and design flaws. Definitely do not skip this one. Great info!

Amazing Woodworking Techniques

Perfectly square corners are essential in many builds and somehow seem to be difficult to attain. “If only you had a few more hands,” right? Before you go out and purchase some expensive corner clamps, check out these DIY corner clamps you can make from some scrap material you may already have lying around the shop.

CHEST’ER

This is a really interesting project I came across this week, that might look intimidating at first glance, but once you watch CHEST’ER work through each process to build the Moon Chair, it might just get some creative juices flowing.

Paoson WoodWorking

The plunge router is a great tool to have in a power tool shop. It gives you a lot of versatility and can make your projects more efficient. What do you do though when you have plunge router tastes on a rotary tool budget? Build a plunge base like this one from Paoson WoodWorking.

Many people, at one time or another, have probably thought of building a greenhouse. It provides a lot of year-round benefits and is cool to look at. Sometimes the construction of the project is a quick deterrent for people. This video highlights an interesting “lean-to style” greenhouse that doesn’t take a lot of fancy material and is much simpler than it’s stand-alone cousins.

As Wood Turns

Though primarily a woodturning channel, in this video, Alan shows a little bit different side of himself as he takes you through how to use a chemical reaction to get a lighter hue for a project. I would really like to try this on a darker wood like Walnut to see how it might react. Note, this project could be a little dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing and might fall under the “don’t try this at home category,” and definitely falls under the “Do at your own risk” category.
