Interesting Stuff From Around The Web #258 – October 12, 2019

Every week I like to share a few things I find interesting. Mostly video content with an occasional website article. All of the content you will find in these posts is free to you. Remember that liking, subscribing, or sharing free content goes a long way in helping produce more free content. If you like that creator’s work, share it! Also, thank you to those who send me links through the week when you find something really interesting.

Exploring Alternatives

This week I came across a really cool “off-grid micro cabin” and I had to share it with you all. Take a tour in this video of a cabin that runs on solar energy with a human powered energy wheel, and it even has a heated floor.

Pen turning is a really fun aspect of the turning hobby niche in woodworking, but what if you don’t have a lathe? Take a look at this video from James Wright where he makes a nice looking pen with a hand plane.

The Newbie Woodworker

Distractions in the woodshop can be very dangerous, especially if you have ADD. This video from The Newbie Woodworker highlights some common distractions and safety measures in the woodshop and one really interesting solution to making sure you don’t accidentally move your fingers into the table saw blade before it comes to a complete stop. He’s also got a great article on ADD that you can read here: https://thenewbiewoodworker.com/2019/09/04/woodworking-and-add-redux.html

Wildman Tech

Do you ever find yourself working on a project that previously or historically would feature vintage or antique latching mechanisms that would be really difficult or virtually impossible to find? Don’t give in to the temptation to add updated hardware. Instead, get some inspiration from this video from Wildman Tech and consider reproducing your own.

Wm. Walker Co.

This is a quick video on learning to draft by hand. If you aren’t very good at drawing up plans, this quick tip video could put you on the right path to learning some of the basic principles of the art of drafting. I have a 2 year degree in Computer Aided Drafting and Design and one of the most fun classes was fundamentals of drafting where we learned with pencil and paper. Good times indeed :)

izzy swan

Getting perfect miters on the table saw is not always an easy task. In this video, Izzy demonstrates a common mistake that woodworkers make and features an interesting jig to take some of the guesswork out of achieving those perfect miters that help our projects fit together just right. The jig is great but embedding it into the table saw is the icing on the cake.

  1. Keep it up Jay. I find stuff on your web that constantly stretches my imagination. Starting to redo the circle board with much smaller circles so a teacher friend can use it in her classroom with kindergarden and first graders.

  2. Always have a 2 ton winch setup for tasks like moving machines for maintenance to deer hanging for cut up. That’s been up for 10 years now.
Interesting stuff from Izzy too. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Thanks Jay,
It’s great you put this together for us, me being a new woodworker up in Alberta Canada. My shop is not ready (half a garage) and it’s taking a long time, but some day I’ll be in a heated well lit shop and look forward to the exciting things that can be creating. Love that nesting chair.

  4. Make sure your wife, kids, and dog knows they can’t talk to you until they are sure you are to a stopping point.

    • It’s a great point, Roy. Even someone walking into the shop can make you look up to see who’s there. My wife is good about listening through the door to check that first. Obviously there’s a limit to how much you can prevent, but it’s definitely worth a short conversation asking them to think about it before walking in. And if you phrase it as “hey, to help keep me safe, could you…” instead of “don’t bother me if I’m…”, it goes a long way :)
