Every week I like to share a few things I find interesting. Mostly video content with an occasional website article. All of the content you will find in these posts is free to you. Remember that liking, subscribing, or sharing free content goes a long way in helping produce more free content. If you like that creator’s work, share it! Also, thank you to those who send me links through the week when you find something really interesting.

A shim is not simply a shim. A bad shim is frustrating. A good shim is your handiest friend in times of need. Ok, those words might be a bit much for a simple shim but you can’t deny how handy they are. Matt shows you how easy it can be to create quality shims in your own shop instead of buying low quality pine shims.

How difficult could a simple arch be? Simple bent lamination, right? Well, yes. But often times a simple outcome has a lot of precise steps. I love how this quick video showcases the amount of prep work in creating the form and preparing the stock vs the relatively small amount of work in the actual bent lamination.

Please stop what you’re doing and play Beat It by Michael Jackson to pump yourself up before watching this video. Just kidding. The art of CREATING gold leaf to be used on other works of art is actually quite interesting.

I love getting behind a behind the scenes look into unique specific purpose machines that you normally wouldn’t see. That and a look inside Lakeside Woodworks is what you’re getting with this one. Great video, Bruce.

It’s all in the details folks. For heirloom pieces anyway. What a great transformation of a highly sentimental piece. This is a smile project. One of those projects that you have sitting around the house for the unsuspecting guest to open and light up with a smile.

I’ve met Shawn in person and he’s a true gent. ALWAYS promoting the craft and teaching woodworking to others. He’s got a pretty nice giveaway going on that I think more people should know about.

I’m just blown away by all the engineering in this video. When you think you’ve seen it all the machine is transformed into something else. The only tool that remains the same is the drill. Just incredible. I’m including a direct link to the plans he has for sale for those who are interested. Go show this engineer some love: https://jisaku-koubou.com/downloads/6in1drill-press

And here’s part 2. Many more parts are already live in this series. Click through to his channel to see more.

I’m going to leave you with one final video of an engineering marvel. A Radio Controlled Ornithopter (a machine designed to achieve flight by means of flapping wings.) This looks like something straight out of a James Bond movie designed for spying on the target!

That mans giveaway is really incredible!
However, I’ve never one anything in my life so I won’t be participating in another pipe dream.
Thanks for the feature, Jay! I really want one of those Slab Master machines. I think there is a pretty big need for something like that in our area.
Of course it is big – it is Australian made.
The guy building the drill press/multi-tool makes Mathias look like a chump. With all due respect to Mathias. Good video Jay. I started watching your stuff on your website to help you out more. Keep up the good work.
When you call a guy a chump, you can’t say you’re showing respect.
Thanks, Jay!
Good comment. I say it takes one to know one!!!!! but neither are chumps especially Mathias, don’t know this other fella never heard off him and I have decided I will not take a look
I agree that both guys are good but you should take a look at this guy. His work is excellent.
Hey Jay,
Thanks for posting the recent ‘Say No to Stubby Shims’ video here on your blog! It’s surely a reason for accelerated view and subscriber activity at Next Level Carpentry in recent days and I really appreciate it. I’ve mentioned it in comments on my channel but will take this occasion to let you know ‘personally’ that you, my friend, are responsible for Chip, my workshop sidekick. True. Watching one of your videos a couple years ago I marveled at your cleverness when you were working away in your shop while, at the same time, you were standing there talking about the work being done. Took me awhile to figger out how you did it (you did a better job with the ‘magic’ then than I do now) but love the effect for a number of reasons. So now I owe you another one!
Best,
Matt

…I know someone…
Great week’s selection Jay. The bent lamination is great. Watching those two guys glueing in the bits into the form, so cool and organised, had me thinking about when I made a tiny lamination (in comparison) and I was racing around trying to get these slippery eels of wood to stay in the forms.
Hello Jay,
Really enjoy all of the content. You are an inspiration to this weekend garage carpenter. I also follow this builder who does some amazing work. This group builds a lot of their own cabinets that I thought you may want to check out or feature.
