Interesting Stuff From Around The Web #266 – December 14, 2019

Every week I like to share a few things I find interesting. Mostly video content with an occasional website article. All of the content you will find in these posts is free to you. Remember that liking, subscribing, or sharing free content goes a long way in helping produce more free content. If you like that creator’s work, share it! Also, thank you to those who send me links through the week when you find something really interesting.

From trees to ship. Not making the ships with wood but rather using them as a means of distribution. A look back at those boards made it to Lowes or Home Depot back in the day. Actually, Lowes was started in 1921 so maybe that part could be true. Home Depot wasn’t started until 1978 so I just added that bit..

When CNC machines and 3d printers first started to become mainstream for the home shop so many people questioned their need. Most wrote them off as gadgets for people wo just want something to play with. Here’s a great example of the usefulness of a 3d printer.

Spring is right around the corner, right? Not quite. But bookmark this one for future use. This is one of the best 15 minute or less tutorials on how to build a deck.

I’ll take a house with a view please. Tree or no tree? I guess the insulation was added in the walls for future proofing? Considering there’s a huge hole for the tree.. Regardless, I’ll take 2 please :)

overthehill outdoors

This is technically sleeping under water, right? I know these shelters have been used forever but all I could picture is it collapsing on me. Could you sleep in one of these?

I love how boats and tubs like this demonstrate how well wood can create a water tight seal on its own. Just a reasonably flat joint and water to make it water tight. Would you prefer a wood hot tub like this or a modern tub built for comfort?

From a single large bucket to sit in to mass manufacturing large barrels. I find it interesting to watch various manufacturing processes and see simple tools used for specific tasks. For example, the aluminum (I think) hooks used when adding the lids from the inside out.

I like the mix of acrylic and wood for this tool holder. Especially the drawers. Being able to see in without opening them is really nice.

  1. Thanks Jay! I loved watching the 1930’s logging film. Pretty impressive that they were that technologically advanced back then. Boy! That 48′ long Bandsaw!!!! Holy molly! It was funny to see them ride it… Really enjoyed it. Thank you.

  2. Jay, For almost thirty two years I taught Boy Scouts how to build snow shelter and then we put it into practice. My last camp-out was on the Pesheke Grade in Michigans Upper peninsula we built igloos and stayed two days. It hit -22 degrees F the second night. I was also an Air Marshal for thew USAF for 10 years during witch time I taught survival skills to many military trainee’s. I always made them practice what we preached. If you want to come to Marquette, Michigan I’m not to old to teach yet ????.
