Interesting Stuff From Around The Web #277 – October 16, 2021

Occasionally I like to share a few things I find interesting. Mostly video content with an occasional website article. All of the content you will find in these posts is free to you. Remember that liking, subscribing, or sharing free content goes a long way in helping produce more free content. If you like that creator’s work, share it! Also, thank you to those who send me links throughout the week when you find something really interesting.

Mike Farrington

This is a very interesting concept. Because of its tapered profile, it only contacts the wood in one spot which results in a sanding scratch pattern that goes with the grain. If this were done to a flat disk then you would have the sandpaper sanding in the downward direction as the wood enters the disk and sanding in an upward direction as it exits the disk. Mike sells these discs as well.

Seth’s Project Woodworking

Nothing but quality craftsmanship in this build. My favorite part is the sliding dovetail to connect the top to the frame. I want to try that someday. The attached spacer blocks for trimming the exposed tenon to the appropriate height is also a great technique.

RobCosman.com (YouTube channel)

Rob Cosman is my favorite source for hand tool woodworking education. In this video, he shows his way to get a great finish that is incredibly easy to achieve. When Deft brushing lacquer was sold locally by the quart it was my go-to finish as well.

Michael Alm

This is a great picture frame jig that has been shown and modified by various people online. If you plan on making picture frames then this is a must-make jig.

Woah…this machine is impressive. It’s not too practical for common woodworkers but it’s still fascinating to see it in action and see the joint explained.

Blake Weber

This setup has everything but the kitchen sink. Actually, it has one of those too. But can it play Crysis?

Have workshop envy? Here’s a bit of humble pie about what can be achieved when you want to get something done. Very efficient use of space in a very capable small shop.

Small-scale work is just as impressive as large-scale work to me. The physical size of large-scale stuff is interesting but the precision needed for small-scale stuff to look good is tedious. And then when you make something small that not only looks great but works as intended. Well, that’s icing on the cake, a very tiny cake.

  1. Wow! That little…er…TINY plane is hilarious! Very well done but what a waste of time! I’d like to see what a full size plane would look like with his skills!

Thanks for sharing! I love watching all these stories!

    • Its not a waste of time if he had fun and/or sharpened his skills while doing it. I am not claiming that it is a practical tool when done, but I know I would have learned a LOT making something that small and precise.

  2. YES YES YES! I’ve missed these. Thank you Jay for putting this collection together. Please make it a thing again. You seem to find so much more interesting video/s than I when browsing YT.
