Dovetailed Chainsaw Chest – Full Build

The first project out of the new shop is a Chainsaw Chest for my four-wheeler. The corners are dovetailed. The lid is glued, nailed and screwed. The bottom is glued, nailed, and screwed. Yes, I broke woodworking rules with expansion and contraction, but no, it’s not going to be an issue. Because I didn’t allow room for contraction as the wood dries, the bottom will (already has) crack. In a piece of furniture, I wouldn’t have done this. But in a utility box that is going to get beat up on my four-wheeler, cracks do not matter. There are enough nails and screws in the bottom for it to hold up just fine.

  1. Great vid, Jay~! Yes, very cool that you have a wood source within walking distance of the shop and the gear to dimension it down to workable stock. Nice job cutting those dovetails in that wet wood. I haven’t tried that yet. Came out nice~!
Being a retired Army guy, I love the OD Green color scheme idea~! Or even Desert Tan would look good with black stenciling. Got a buddy that likes the “zombie apocalypse” approach (as do I). He was going to label the door of his little workshop with “ZETA” (Zombie Elimination Tools & Accessories), but never did. I think his wife objected. Just an idea, if you’re interested. Your very own ZETA box. ; – )
