Day 814 – This was Long Overdue

I’ve accidentally run into a lumber shortage. And I want to get some beams cut on the CNC for small-scale timber framing. So it’s sawmill time. However, the sawmill area has reached a boiling point.

We’re on schedule with a logging company to get our pines harvested this fall. Between me not being able to dedicate time to get them down, the sheer volume of commercially planted pines that we have, the destructive beetles, and the itching desire to get a dedicated sawmill shelter funded and built, the pines will come down.

Every time I mention clearing the pines, I get an email from a tree hugger telling me I’m destroying the planet. I get it, I love to hug trees too. Especially the pretty ones (oo-la-la!). But the fact of the matter is, these pines were a commercially planted crop. Harvest time is coming soon. Also, the harvest will happen one way or another. Might as well get it over with because it’s going to drastically change the appearance of our property in a bad way. It’s going to get ugly fast. Let’s get that ugly stage behind us while we are still young.

  1. If you see me hugging a tree there’s a good chance I am trying to estimate board feet.
(Yeah I know it’s not original).
You bought the property, the trees are yours, you can harvest them or you can let the beetles eat them.
Either way the trees are goners.
I hope you got a good fair price from the loggers.

  2. In this situation – you are a farmer and it’s harvest time for this crop. You are entitled to make a living farming your crop. And we all know you’re going to plant more interesting and diverse stuff.

From watching today’s video we can all see that you will benefit from getting more shelters/buildings on that property to support your work.
