Interesting Stuff From Around The Web #260 – October 26, 2019

Every week I like to share a few things I find interesting. Mostly video content with an occasional website article. All of the content you will find in these posts is free to you. Remember that liking, subscribing, or sharing free content goes a long way in helping produce more free content. If you like that creator’s work, share it! Also, thank you to those who send me links through the week when you find something really interesting.

Wes Hamstra

There’s a lot to love about this project. Great, long lasting joinery. Great grain selection for a beautiful contrasting final piece. And a really nice look at a homemade slot mortiser.

Have a shaky bandsaw? There’s a few things you can check but most likely you have a wheel that’s not properly balanced. Here’s a video showing how to balance the wheel without cutting or removing any material.

Making an X-Wing fly! If only I could take a ride in it. Could you imagine how many tickets would be sold if someone could make a full size X-Wing plane and offer it as a ride? I’d be in line :)

I bet you’ve never looked at a tree and thought of a vacuum… As a woodworker, trees are our canvas. We chop them up and make beautiful or functional pieces. The larger the tree the greater potential for usable material. But in order for a tree to grow tall and strong it needs water, lots of water. This video examines how trees bend the laws of physics to get the water they need to be as tall as they can be.

You may have already seen this video as it’s been viewed an incredible 40 Million times already. I’ve heard of sharks being able to smell a drop of blood a mile away. I’m sure you have too. But is it true? Sounds like a “fun” opportunity to do some live testing!

  1. Hi Jay— I‘m watching the videos here on your website to optimize your ad revenue potential, but I was wondering if there’s an embedded YouTube link that allows access to full-screen viewing. Is that an option? Thanks…great content as always. ????

    • In the lower right corner of every video is a box that will make it full screen. That’s what’s showing up on my end viewing with the Chrome browser.

  2. Wow loved the one about the trees as the editor says “I will never look the same at trees”
    Nature is brilliant !
    thanks Jay

  3. I really liked the clip about balancing the wheels on the HF bandsaw. I think that I will try to use masking tape rather than the paper clips to test fit the weights to the wheel frame and maybe use one on either side as it seemed that he still had a considerable vibration when he finished.
