I’m not sure about the saw you are using but most saws have a line on them that shows which direction a tree will fall when you are cutting the wedge.
Yes, of course. I think you might have misunderstood my brief confusion. I cut the wedge in the intended direction, with the help of the guidelines on the saw. It fell in the intended direction. I was unsure of what effect cutting the extra hinge wood on either side would have on the fall direction of the tree.
The weight / shape of canopy plays a role as well .
