Segmented Spoilboard, with a side of logs and a flood..

The CNC spoilboard is done. Well, the horizontal table. It’s a similar but much different design than the last one. Less expensive hardware, more capability. Of course, a few scheduling curveballs. Unexpected events are becoming more expected..

    Question… Won’t the t-track keep you from making through cuts ???! Am I missing something? Thank you for sharing your story!!

    • No. The spoilboard surface is always higher than the track. And through cuts on material are cut 0.01″ into the spoilboard surface. When the spoilboard gets chewed up so much that pieces don’t lay flat, the spoilboard is surfaced, removing 0.02″ of material. When you get close to the top of the track, glue down another layer of 3/4″ MDF and the process repeats.

The segmented spoilboard is a clever way to avoid throwing away a full sheet every time one zone gets chewed up, though the thing worth stressing for anyone copying it is keeping the segments coplanar after the first resurfacing — it only takes a few thousandths of step between panels to show up in a wide surfacing pass. Screwing from underneath into threaded inserts rather than through the top saves a lot of grief later. Nice to see the flood coat trial too; the water-based finishes have improved enormously for shop fixtures where you do not want to lose the shop to fumes for two days.
