Can Scaled Models Sell More Furniture?

Can scaled models sell more furniture? I’m not sure, as I don’t make furniture to sell. But from the outside looking in, I do think there’s some value to consider (pun intended). Even if you don’t make items to sell, I think there is a lot of value in making scaled versions of your projects before or after you make the actual project.

Free files mentioned in the video can be downloaded below. They are .xcs files for xTool’s laser engraver software and are downloaded via a .zip file. Extract, open, and cut.

  1. Jay,

Since Trimble bought Sketchup the only free version is online use and no extensions can be used. Unless you have a reason to use it all the time it’s not worth $119 a year.

  2. Hi Jay,

I build models for a living. A significant part of my work is building models for heavy industry. Many of these corporations cannot take their products to trade shows due to logistics, hall space, and cost to move something like a 72’ Long diesel-electric locomotive into a convention center for example. I build large scale locomotives for this purpose. A 100 lb 10’ long model still shows every external feature on the prototype for much less than the cost of transporting the real thing into a show hall. A well executed model can and usually will assist in growing sales.

With models on six continents, I must be doing something right…in spite of myself.

Feel free to contact me if you want to discuss further. I’m not looking for business rather than sharing knowledge with some who has shared a lot knowledge with me.

    Keep making dust,
