Day 217 – Shop Build Day 2 & 3

Day 2 of the shop build went by fast. Time flies when you’re having fun, right?! Man, what a day! The crew worked nonstop and accomplished quite a bit. The roof trusses, roof purlins, and wall gerts went up. While all of this was going on, I further processed the downed pines from previous videos. I still haven’t had a chance to move the logs much due to muddy egress paths and giving right of way priority to the building crew.

I didn’t get any footage of the crew working on the shop on Day 3. I had a bit of running around to do, so we spent the day together as a family. I did go back before sunset to get a progress video of what they accomplished. It’s coming along nicely if I do say so myself :)

Nothing works unless you do!

  1. Since those are out swinging doors, did they use security hinges to prevent someone from popping the pins out and prying the door away from the frame?

    • I’m not sure. However, we have a security plan in place, and it will be redundant when we move out there. I’m not worried about someone taking the time to destroy the hinges.

  2. Jay, why do you use a short measuring stick and move it twice when cutting into logs rather than a longer stick that you won’t have to move?

    • 4’1″ stick allows me to mark out multiples of 4. Two lengths for an 8′ log, three for 12′ log. 2-1/2 for 10′. 4 for 16′. Easier to carry around. The stick is slightly longer than 4′ to make sure I don’t under-measure by a tiny bit. I also cut about a fist width longer after the last flip to end up around 6″ longer than whatever length log I’m trying to get to for checking and such.

  3. I am so happy for BPO3. I can feel the excitement on the progress, the lumber you’ll get out of the stand of pine, a working woodworking shop (again), and the hope for the permaculture area.

Great progress, but I have one request of you. For your protection and piece of mind for your family get yourself a pair of chaps to wear when using a chainsaw. Enough said, I’ll keep watching the progress.
