2023 Shop Tour + Shop setup recommendations

It’s been a couple of years since my last shop tour video. And, of course, stuff has changed sine then. Hopefully, you can get some inspiration or information out of this video that helps you with your shop setup.

  1. Thank you, thank you, thank you for making a truly inspiring and informative video. Your time and energy is much appreciated. I think an overlooked aspect of shop setup and use is how often things need to be mobile and solid. I definitely liked your bucket rod as I have recently been doing things which require a laser level, but as you noted tripods are not very conducive to limited space situations.

Keep up the great work in producing these videos. Blessings to you and your family.

  2. you mentioned the name of the aluminum pipe you use and also an alternative that is cheaper. Can you please provide the names of those.

    Love your video’s.

  3. Once again you have provided a most helpful video.
Thank you for sharing your journey with us !!
Your hard work should be a inspiration to all
    Thank You !!

  4. Jay: VERY helpful regarding my future plans to build a similar size shop, actually not too far from you at a house we intend to build on a property just purchased in Ocean Springs, MS. Your details on DC systems and workflow are most helpful. One question (for now) about your comment at 12:52 min. about California Air Systems offering DC ducting similar to Nordfab. I went to their web site and cannot find anything about such a product line. In my search I did come upon US Duct (https://www.us-duct.com) located in NC. Could they be the company you meant to suggest.
    Thanks much

  5. Jay: Just saw your correction about Carolina Air Systems – thank you. Will check them out as well as US Duct.

  6. Hi Jay,
Great tour and explanation of what you are all about. Fantastic.
You said multiple times that you cannot expel air out of the building…why? Even if it’s filtered? Just wondering what the issue is?

    • The space is climate controlled. I live in very humid and hot Mississippi. If I exhaust outside, I’ll be pumping my cooled air out and pulling in hot outside air. It would cause my air conditioning to run constantly.

  7. I don’t have the room I once had, I’m dealing with a two car garage. We just moved from Indiana, I had a big area with all the needs, eventually I think we can get there. There not one of your helpful videos’ that I don’t get some great info….

  8. “Everything you work hard for should be nice”. You have a great camera presence. Thank you for sharing your work space. Ideas have been generated.

  9. Great tour Jay !
I love the new “ish” setup.
BTW – Hammer Down Woodworking has a pretty cool clamp rack.

  10. Excellent video and a very impressive shop. I especially like the intro where are you showed your beginnings in the trailer; inspiring. The only question I have is on your Laguna bandsaw, is that a spotlight attached to the top to point down at the table? That is a great idea, do you have the manufacturers information for that?

    • It’s an accessory light Laguna offers for their saws. I don’t find it incredibly useful, but I have a lot of overhead lighting in the shop already.

  11. One aspect that you could have added to your list is to have mobile carts for machinery, tools, clamps, etc so that they can be adjusted for particular projects, clean ups, etc. Only my assembly table and work bench are not mobile in my workshop.

Two other features I have always liked about your this and the previous workshops is that they always looked clean and tidy and your built stands, carts etc always look very nice.

I have adopted the Adam Savage approach and have my fasteners, hand tools, special attachments in plastic cases which in turn are in mobile carts.

    Thanks for showing us about

  12. Did you have to get additional pipe to reconfigure the Dust Collection location ? Did you record Video of the reconfigure ? The Shop currently looks completely different from when you moved in. The work in progress has become a really work flow and space saving dream 👍👍👍

  13. Hello Jay! Great info and video!

What made you decide to shift to full time media and content versus Woodworking focused business, such as production and selling.

How does one really begin the content side of things? I have gave this some though to dabble into, but I wouldn’t know where to start and don’t know how to have a media presence and it seems a lot of wood workers are getting in the content creating instead of woodworking.

    Thanks for you insight,
